Down from Burro Pass
The Benson Lake Loop, August 2002
Finally, after an extended session of viewing and exploring, I rejoined my pack for a snack and then a reluctant departure from this excellent vantage-point with its wonderful views. I wondered if I would ever see it again. The top section was steep and worn with multiple switchbacks, but the steepest part did not last long. It would be grueling coming from the other direction if the hiker already had put in a bunch of miles that day. The terrain was typical canyon above tree line with low grass, (flowers if early to mid-season) and bushes in the wetter areas near canyon bottom.
Looking back towards Burro Pass just below the rough section below the pass. A view of the pass (center), Sawtooth Ridge, and to the right, Matterhorn Peak. Note the faint trail.
At one point I heard voices, but with the area being so open and the viewing distances so great, they could be in plain sight but only dots in the distance. Voices carry with the breezes out there. They could have been on the mountain, on the far pass, or down in the canyon someplace.
