Reluctantly leaving the river spectacle behind, the climb continues past the frothing cascade to a drift fence and gate. Beyond the gate you know you have crested yet another "giant step", because once again you are forced to embrace a staggering view. You are now at the foot of Ranger Meadow, and Deadman Canyon is spread out before you in all its glacially forged glory. In early season the meadow is covered with probably more Shooting Stars than you have ever seen on any Sierra trip!
