Entering the Real High Country

Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins via Colby Pass, September, 2000.

September, 2000. Day 3
This day would end in a less than desirable circumstances, but it started off well enough. The night again was a bit too warm for real comfort but fatigue guaranteed fairly sound sleep.

The high point 11,380 above Big Wet Meadow and Josephine Lake

As usual is the Sierra, the morning was sunny and calm. As we hit the trail, I began to see high thin clouds, harbingers of things to come. We retraced our steps from the day before when we were looking for a better site and before long we crossed Cunningham Creek, a threaded affair that I could not judge if it would be a problem early season. The going up that point was fairly level over mostly grassy flats that after Cunningham Creek turned into fairly mild climbing. The trees began to thin out, and some trees that were large at lower altitude were now mere bushes, such as the Aspen thickets, which we made our way through.
