Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins

Kaweah22

The view of the Kaweah region from the pass looking generally south. The trail works its way down to the lake below, then heads for the lower meadow seen mid-picture below the small round lake. Mt. kaweah can be seen on the right horizon.

Turning to the south the view was even more impressive. Just below was another high barren rockbound lake the trail would pass very close to. Beyond the barren moonscape to timberline far below another shallow medium sized looking lake sat on a table-like expanse. The Kern-Kaweah canyon waited out of sight below, but the cut of the canyon could be clearly seen. Above the canyon were arrayed a line of interesting looking peaks, with Mt. Kaweah anchoring a jagged set of peaks to its right. To the left across the Kern Trench I could plainly see Mt. Guyot where I had crossed Guyot Pass a few weeks before on my Mt. Whitney trip.

Mid-picture on the horizon is Mt. Guyot. The Kern-Kaweah trench can be seen below.

I hiked out a ways to my left to gain the shoulder of a nearby ridge to try to catch sight of the Milestone area and points north. I was glad we had waited for better weather to catch these grand views.
