ABOVE: The large lake below is Bighorn Lake with Blackcap Basin behind. The lake seen on the right edge is Ambition Lake which has a cross-country route to the Goddard area. Note the grey vocanic intrusion common to the area on the other side of the divide. Just beyond the grey area is a grassy ramp leading to the divide crossing.
Blackcap Basin
Blackcap Basin can be accessed from many directions: over Confusion Pass, Blackcap Pass, from the North Fork Kings River, and from Bighorn Lake from other nearby cross-country passes. Blackcap Basin is an impressive wide open granite wonderland of easy cross-country travel. Not pictured but indeed down there is Lightening Corral Meadow (yes, there is a corral there), and many lakelets to explore. Many impressive peaks over 12,000 feet are in the area, tempting peak baggers. The king of peaks which dominates the whole region is Mt. Goddard, just over the divide. I suppose you could fish too, if you wanted to. Whatever.
