ABOVE: This picture was taken of Portal Lake on the cross-country route to Midway Lake. The climb is class 2-3 on steep talus. A better route to the top of this bench is farther down near Pearl Lake.
Above Portal Lake
There is a good packer campsite next to a clump of trees on the north shore, and an exposed backpacking campsite across the outlet on the southwest shore. While not shown on any map, north of Portal Lake the trail continues on passing the ponds there to the east and on to Pearl Lake.
