The Ottoway Lakes Loop
One of the more spectacular views from the trail as it begins its descent to the river. Now you know why the trail detours around this section. This is looking up-river east.
Back Down to the River
The Ottoway Lakes Loop, September 2004After a short walk, the trail left the cool green and sod of rich forest for rock and a beginning of switchbacks leading back down to the river. At one point at the corner of one switchback is a truly spectacular view east back up the canyon. Anybody with a camera should save a few shots for this particular view, one of the best of the trail. A nice view of the far peaks framed by steep white granite walls with the river cascading and falling down the middle of the whole scene. Words cannot do it justice.
The trail plunges dramatically down multiple switchbacks an its way to the next set of Merced River bridges.
Below the switchbacks the blasted and carved trail becomes rough, steep and rocky. Going up or down, this trail segment is a chore, with all the over-engineered features of Yosemite trail: steep steps, rip-rap, rock bins and generally uneven footing that is hard on your feet. It is also exposed and with the reflections off the white rocks, it gets very hot. After the trail plunges down near the river, it enters a small forest and a very delightful spot to stop and rest, which I did.
When the trail finally reaches the river, you have this great view upstream.
