A Solo Hike Along the Silver Divide
The trail sign to Graveyard Lakes. Its beginning to look like high country now.
Graveyard Lakes JunctionSilver Divide Trip from Edison Lake Trailhead, August-September 2001
Day 2, September 1st, 2001:Graveyard Meadow to Wilber May Lake, 7.7 miles, 2693' gain, 1706' loss.
After a mild if fitful night, the morning dawned in typical Sierra fashion, sunny and cool. I made breakfast and prepared for the next leg of the journey with a leisurely pace. Soon enough I was ready to go and back on the trail. It had been a nice camp and would have been even nicer early season.
The trail began to climb immediately and crossed Cold Creek over stones. Early season, as I had found out, that stream crossing is a wet crossing. Back at Graveyard Meadow, if you can find a nice place to cross (or you came up on the trail on the other side), you can find the old trail on the south side of the meadow and avoid the frisky crossing on the main trail. The trail swept around traversing to the right and climbed for a distance then gently leveled out for a good long distance. This trail has been rerouted in fairly recent years, and does not cross the stream as many time as shown on older maps. The trail along this section is interesting; with nice level camps, sparse forest, small intimate glens and dells with a scattering of broad areas of perfectly level open shaded areas. The trail swept back to the stream and a large packer camp, and then followed the stream closely before veering away to an avalanche area of twisted trees and small glacier smoothed domes. Shortly after this section the trail leveled out in a meadow, crossed a small stream and met the Graveyard Lake junction. I was surprised I came on it so quickly.
