Maybe Somebody Shot the Moose.

According to "Place names of the Sierra Nevada", by Peter Browning, the name "Moose Lake" was given to the lake by Hale Tharp, because old-timers called the big mountain bucks "Moose-deer". Go figure. It explains the name for Buck Creek and canyon, named after buck-deer. "Moose-buck-deer." Get it?
