A Walk on the Tablelands

The Great Western Divide

The whole trail from Panther Gap to Alta Meadows weaves in and out contouring the flanks of Alta Peak, one moment deep in forest, the next on a trail carved out of sheer and solid granite. The views are some of the best of the Sierra, and the trail one of the most memorable. A dayhike to Alta Meadow and back is the least for anyone who loves the Sierra can do. A long dayhike would get you to the Summit of Alta Peak and back to the trailhead, which I did a few summers back. The summit of Alta Peak rewards the hiker with a view of nearly the whole of the Great Western Divide. It would be tragic to live and never see this view.
