The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne and Falls

Looking towards Wildcat Point and "Mattie Falls" from the floor of Glen Aulin

Glen Aulin

The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne and Falls, June 2004

The floor of Glen Aulin is mostly a thick forest. Not so thick you cannot walk through it, but thick enough to obscure the surrounding views most of the time. There is a lot of deadfall mainly due to flooding, but the trail was always clear when it was not flooded (at the west end only). Near the walls it was mostly open and grassy, which was nice.

Looking north from the trail not too far from Mattie Falls, at the midpoint of Glen Aulin. You can walk right up that rib of granite. It looks worth exploring.

At one point the trail edges the foot of a long sloping rib of granite that leads up to the saddle between Point 8886 and Wildcat Point. It looks like you could walk right up that rib to the hights above and perhaps make your way to Mattie Lake. We had heard from someone camping in the area there was one small cliff to get past, but not a too hard of an obstacle to overcome. There may be other ways to get up there too because it is a big section. I definitely want to check the area out.

Looking across the Tuolumne River to the far walls. The dead trees are probably that way due to flooding.

After that granite rib (clearly seen on a map at about the middle of Glen Aulin), the trail is mostly just a long pleasant level forest walk to "Glen Aulin Cascade".
