Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins
Yup, the trail crosses this gully, climbs out on easy trail, but not before crossing a small creek. The Whaleback is to the right. Down canyon unnamed peaks line the skyline.
The Views Get Better
Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins via Colby Pass, September, 2000.
After the cascades the trail works its way into a small brushy bowl to a small stream for a safe perhaps wet crossing early season. After passing through the large bushy area, the trail pulled up to a pleasant tree shaded granite paved park-like area with the stream sliding over stone stairs and slabs off to the right beyond a mostly shaded open flat granite apron. If I had looked, I probably would have found camps nearby, for it was an ideal area for such activity.A small stream graces the park-like area.
It also was this area where the trail seemed to be the most unmaintained as are all areas dominated by the classic high Sierra glacier scoured white granite. Generally ducks or the wear of horse hooves marked the trail, so it was not too much trouble following the route. However, it was to be an off and on problem all the way to Colby Lake. Still, the way was a High Sierra way with all the scenery and joys of the true high country, replete with small flowery gardens, large trees growing out of mere cracks in the granite pavement, small twisted groves of trees, pocket meadows and everywhere peppered with glacial erratics.
