Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins

Looking back along the lake near the swampy ford area, you can see the notch on the upper right where the trail passes through. At this point it was good to see the sun and normal temperatures.

Turning the Lake

Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins via Colby Pass, September, 2000.

The journey started out with a short climb up to a rock outcrop overlooking the lake then a sharp descent to the lakeshore to the crossing of a stream. By observing the hikers the day before we knew the way NOT to go. The correct route was to stay low following the wet trail through the bushes. A wrong step rewarded you with water up to your ankles, but careful picking of the way and the help of gaiters got us through this section with dry socks.
