Big Five / Little Five Lakes Loop

Timber Gap lives up to is name with timber spilling over the gap from the other side.

Timber Gap

Big 5, Little 5 Lakes Loop and Sawtooth Pass, August 4th to 7th, 2000.

Disappearing into trees, the trail then climbs the last few feet to gain Timber Gap, which lives up to its name. The trail summit still allows great views of Alta Peak and meadow, Little Blue Dome, and even a section of the High Sierra Trail. I would see more of that trail from afar on Blackrock Pass and south of Big Five Lakes. In the shade of huge trees and pleasant surroundings, I sat down in my chair for lunch and the time to examine the view.
Later I looked around for the trail to the Empire Mine and found the faint track, but I felt I did not have time to search for it. Perhaps sometime later on a day-hike I will seek it out.

Just over the gap the trail plunges downward with occasional fair views.

I finally packed up and resumed the load and headed downward on steep trail. The trail, from the gap to the stream, is seemingly endless. I was very glad I was not going up that snake, for it was rocky and in some lengthily sections, very steep.
