Sphinx Lakes in Kings Canyon

The last small lake just below the large Sphinx Lakes above. The rocky ridge ahead is the route to the upper lakes.

Approaching Timberline

This next lake is not nearly as impressive as the first lower lake, but better than many in the Sierra. Two camp spots, a fire ring or two, tall trees (still at this altitude!) even taller than the lake below, and a talus headwall. The inlet is interesting: it is a waterfall high above on the headwall, then it just disappears into the talus...

Turning to the left, a faint use trail leads through bush to high open country over broken and solid granite: above tree line at last!
