A Walk on the Tablelands

Table36

Mt. Brewer is the sharp point on the right horizon. Below is the lakes one would shoot for when heading for Big Bird Lake. In mid picture is Deadman Canyon.

Deadman Canyon

We headed down the ridge north past a small lake and beyond to another overlook at about 11139 feet, with a view of lake 10402 to the north. Here I made the major mistake of not looking at the map carefully enough. It was complicated by the fact that we were at the juncture of four map quads, I only had one of those maps with me at the time, and the others were in my pack. Had I been more on my (sore) toes, we could of traveled a very short distance to the east to possibly see Big Bird Cirque and Deadman Canyon. In any case, I could see the way down to lake 10402 and thence to Big Bird Cirque. Had we another day at our disposal, we could of done this route instead of the way we eventually had gone. As it was, both Big Bird Cirque and Deadman Canyon were blocked from view, the only possibility of seeing them was from a ridge near Lonely Lake.
