Mt. Whitney From Cottonwood Lakes
Siberian Outpost as seen from the trail. Not far away below is a trail leading up to the ridge and Siberian Pass. Not far down the trail is a junction that leads to Siberian Outpost and Siberian Pass, among other destinations.
Siberian OutpostMt. Whitney Trip from Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead. June 2000.
At a trail junction I came across 5 college age young adults who were somewhat lost. They were intent on climbing Mt. Whitney in one day from Cottonwood Lakes (nearly impossible) without a map (lunacy). Already they had gone south from Cottonwood Pass to the Rocky Basin Lakes and nearly Funston Lake before they caught their mistake, and had just then found their way back to the correct trail. They were hot and tired already, so we tried to talk some trail wisdom into them before they departed with one of our maps. Later at the next junction we found them huddled with our map, hopefully on their way to New Army Pass. We never saw them or our map again.According to my maps, this is a relatively new section of trail. Siberian Outpost can be seen to the left.
