Mt. Whitney From Cottonwood Lakes

Big Whitney Meadows, seen below from the trail, hides a trail going from left to right passing that island of trees down there on this side. The trail going to the right heads for Siberian Pass.

Big Whitney Meadows

Mt. Whitney Trip from Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead. June 2000.

Along this section of trail the trees are just sparse enough to allow views of Siberian Outpost, Trail Pass, Big Whitney Meadows, and far in the distance the Great Western Divide.

Near the trail summit near Chicken Springs Lake is a view of Big Whitney Meadows. I found the tree-studded talus along this part of the trail fascinating.

The trail itself is a relief from the previous climbing for un-acclimated lungs. While computer profile programs may suggest sharp climbs and drops, this trail section in reality rolls along gently, and trends eventually downward.
