The Benson Lake Loop
A grandly impressive (if slightly hazy) view of the valley below Sawtooth Ridge. I would be camping just above the small white area seen at center picture. Finger Peaks are on the right. Burro pass is in sight.
The View from Mule Pass
The Benson Lake Loop, August 2002
The first thing that hit me was a stupendous view of the Sawtooth Ridge and Finger Peaks above the valley and headwaters of Piute Creek. In the distance I could see the U-shaped pass on the shoulder and south ridge of Matterhorn Peak, and below that, low Burro Pass. The valley below was wooded going to tree-line, and I looked forward to greeting it. To my left I could see the easy terrain leading to the hidden Ice Lake in Little Slide Canyon. That route tempted me. On the jagged ridge-line of the Sawtooth, it was easy to pick out "The Doodad", an enormous block perched precariously on one of the higher teeth of the ridge. A perfect day with perfect weather and a perfect view (aside from some haze). The Ice Lake area and cross-country pass in Little Slide Canyon that takes you back to Twin Lakes. Part of Sawtooth Ridge is on the right.
"The Slide" was out of sight to my right, and it would ever be difficult to see on this trail. So, after sitting for a time eating a snack and wearing out the view, it was time to move on to see the sights.
