Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins
Look carefully and you will see Dave and get an idea of what the cross-country was like. A newbie hiker might find this tough going, be we have done far worse. This travel was easy. About mid picture you can see the dome that was next to our camp.
Heading Back
Kern-Kaweah and Kaweah Basins via Colby Pass, September, 2000.
Going back was easy. After crossing the lakeshore ridge, I headed up the gully while Dave tried a route to the right to mount the small ridge. The way was mostly dirt and grass and I was soon at the ridge top. After meeting up again, Dave went down his talus stair while I followed the gully downward, eventually meeting Dave near the bottom of the talus section. We found our corner route around the ridge and made our way down back the way we came. We actually ended up a bit lower on the Kern-Kaweah River, but a short hike brought us back to our crossing and the place Dave had stashed his sandals on a large boulder. The "step" waterfall below our camp. Behind the falls it had is own little canyon it had carved out below the "lake" outlet.
It was a short hike back to camp, with a stop at the nice waterfall coming off the "step" below our camp. From the falls it was a simple matter of hiking along the river back to camp.
