A Backpack to the Remote Lyell Fork of the Merced River
A rest at the first creek of the High Trail. After that 800 foot climb, a rest was in order. Nearby is a decent camp.
The First Creek on the High Trail
A Trail and Cross-Country Route to the Lyell Fork, July 2007
At last the trail took us down a slope to the first stream on the High Trail, and a source of dependable water all season most years. Therer were lots of rocks of various sizes scattered or piled all around, most likely the work of glaciers. Here we dropped our packs for a rest and to replace the water consumed on the slog up from the Lewis Creek canyon. Nearby was a good established camp, something to keep in mind for someone wanting to do this trip over more days. The mosquitoes were manageable, the surroundings were pleasant and the water was tasty. We had a bit more lunch and both of us tended to our feet.
