A Backpack to the Remote Lyell Fork of the Merced River

Lyell ForkTrip

This is the kind of views we had to put up with while in camp! Merced Peak Fork, Merced Peak, Triple Divide peak, Merced Peak, Red Peak, all can be seen here.

Winding the Day Down

A Trail and Cross-Country Route to the Lyell Fork, July 2007

Behind us looking west we were looking down into the five-canyon junction. The Triple Peak Fork was out of sight around a corner, but the Merced Peak Fork and part of the Red Peak Fork was in view. Deep in the canyon the main trail there was plainly in view towards the bottom of the Merced peak Fork. Almost directly down the canyon on the horizon was Red Peak Pass and Peak. These views confirmed my speculation about the feasibility of cross-country travel down those canyons.

Lyell Fork Trip

Looking down at the very bottom of the Merced Peak Fork, a trail can be plainly seen. I very much remember walking down that trail on another trip, found here in Sierra-Trails.

We headed back because it was finally getting towards dinnertime after a hard day of hiking and staring at the views. We usually eat at about 6PM, and at this time of year, it meant there was another three or more hours of daylight. After dinner and chores it was time for books and chairs while sitting on the edge of the canyon with all of that beautiful scenery before our feet. We watched the slow sunset and the changing colors. When it got dark enough, we hit the sacks for a hard-earned rest.

One last look at our excellent "Waterfall Camp". Dave kicks back in camp.
