Glowing redly, the GWD stands out in sunset relief. Smack dab in the almost center is, you guessed it, Black Kaweah and Kaweah Gap. Eagle Scout Peak stands just to the right. The green of Alta Meadow is in the shadows below. These are the moments cross-country mountaineers live for.


Alpenglow on the Great Western Divide


The warm day finally came to a close, and I went to bed wondering how I would do the next day. I was more tired than I though I should be, and I thought the next day may prove to be as hard as the first. Later I would see my fears were unfounded because the next morning I felt fine and refreshed, fully recovered from the previous day, and obviously more acclimated.
